How to play Minesweeper
Play Minesweeper online for free with easy, medium, and hard boards. Use number clues, flag mines, and clear each field safely.
Guide checked against gameplay:
Objective, rules, and result
A revealed number counts mines in its eight neighbouring cells. Flags are planning aids and do not by themselves win the game. You win by revealing every safe cell and lose by opening a mine.
How to play
- Reveal a square to see how many mines touch it.
- Use flag mode or right-click to mark suspected mines.
- Clear every safe square without selecting a mine to win.
Example: Use a 1 to separate a mine from safe cells
If a revealed 1 has exactly one covered neighbour and all its other neighbours are revealed, that covered cell is a mine: flag it. If a different 1 touches that same confirmed mine, all of its other covered neighbours are safe to reveal. This deduction relies on a correctly identified mine, not merely any placed flag.
Common mistakes
- A flag is your guess, not confirmation from the game. Turn Flag Mode off before tapping to reveal, and remove a mistaken flag before opening that cell.
- A zero automatically opens connected safe areas. Clicking a revealed number does not automatically clear its neighbours, and using every flag does not complete the board.
Modes, restart, and saved progress
- Easy is 9x9 with 10 mines; Medium is 10x12 with 22; Hard is 12x16 with 40. The first revealed cell and its surrounding neighbours are protected from mines. A flag placed before revealing does not start the field or timer.
- After the first reveal, Hint / H opens one guaranteed-safe unflagged area, once per field. Completion is measured by time, not a points score; there is no undo.
- RESET, a difficulty tab, or the board Play Again action starts a fresh field. The shared result Play again action returns to Easy. Open How to play to pause the scene and timer. Shared finish records persist when storage is available, but the unfinished minefield does not.
Controls
Keyboard and mouse: Left-click to reveal; right-click to flag.
Touch: Tap to reveal, or enable Flag Mode before tapping.
Shortcuts: H: safe hint.
Strategies to try
- If a clue already touches its full number of flags, its other covered neighbours are safe.
- If a clue has exactly as many covered neighbours as unmarked mines remaining, flag those neighbours.
Device and accessibility notes
Left-click reveals and right-click flags; touch players can enable Flag Mode. H provides a safe hint. Numbers and flag symbols supplement colour, though the dense grid can be challenging with screen magnification.
Use the Settings control above the game to turn sound or vibration off and to reduce interface motion. Expand mode can provide a larger play area. Records are stored only in this browser when storage is available.
On a small phone, use Expand and landscape for dense grids and canvas controls. These canvas games do not expose a complete board to screen readers; Memory Match and Minesweeper also require a pointer or touch to select cells. Opening the guide or hiding the tab pauses the scene without saving the unfinished board.
